What to Bring and What to Expect:

WHAT TO BRING:

The following are suggested equipment and supplies you should bring with you to the Institute: (Please keep in mind that you are only allowed 40 pounds total of checked luggage on the smaller aircraft that takes you into the village. Alaska Airlines will allow up to 50 pounds without charge, but once you get to Bethel you may be charged for anything over 40 pounds. The rate per pound over that limit is $.50. You are responsible for any excess baggage charges).

  • LIFE JACKET- Participants in the Science Institute will occasionally travel to and from field sites in boats. All participants must bring a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device in order to ride in the boat.Science participants dip netting in Akiachak 2004
  • Sleeping bag/air mattress and/or sleeping pad (you might be sleeping on the floor if teacher housing is not available and you will be camping)
  • Dome tent (you will be camping on the tundra for two nights)
  • Tarp for under your tent (bring one for over your tent if your tent does not have a rain fly)
  • Pillow (it's better than a rolled up jacket when you're sleeping on the floor)
  • Tall rubber boots
  • Tennis shoes
  • Slippers, sandals or other inside shoe for wearing in the school
  • Heavy duty rain coat and pants
  • Warm coat and jacket
  • Hooded sweatshirt
  • Extra clothing: at least two sets each of shirts, pants, underwear, and socks (bring polypropylene or wool, not cotton)
  • Gloves and hat
  • Shorts, tank top, bathing suit (2004 was hot...you never know what the weather will be)Science participants by boat in Akiachak 2004
  • Binoculars
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent and coils
  • Personal hygiene needs and medicines
  • Allergy medications
  • Camera/film
  • Personal snack items
  • Phone Card
  • Travel "mug" (that you can put your name on)
  • Water bottle
  • Towel, washcloth, soap and shampoo
  • Earplugs

  • Family photos for talking circle (these may or may not be used in the discussion)
  • Elders Gifts (3 or 4) (ideas: shampoo, soap, warm socks, gloves, baseball cap, head scarf, towel)
  • Zip Loc Bags (large)

WHAT TO EXPECT:

You will be walking in the villages and the tundra is often uneven and very muddy. The weather, even in the summer months, can be chilly and unpredictable, with rain and very high winds. You will also be out in boats and therefore subjected to the "elements." Pack several layers of warm, waterproof clothing and a good pair of boots (see picture above).
