What to Bring
and What to Expect:
The following are suggested equipment
and supplies you should bring with you to the Institute: (Please
keep in mind that you are only allowed 40 pounds total of checked
luggage on the smaller aircraft that takes you into the village. Alaska
Airlines will allow up to 50 pounds without charge, but once you get
to Bethel you may be charged for anything over 40 pounds. The rate
per pound over that limit is $.50. You are responsible for any excess
baggage charges).
-
LIFE JACKET: Participants
in the History/Social Studies Institute will occasionally travel
to/from field sites in boats. All participants must bring a U.S.
Coast Guard approved personal flotation device in order to ride
in the boat.
-
Two plastic tarps (one
for over and one for under your tent)
-
Dome tent
-
Sleeping bag/air mattress

Slippers, sandals or other
inside shoe for wearing inside the school
-

-
Qaspeq fabric (4 yards), thread
and trim (you will hopefully have time to make qaspeqs during the
Institute, but, if not, these items make great gifts for the village)
-
Cash or check (if you want
a qaspeq made for you. It is not guaranteed you'll find a person
to do it, but the cost is approx. $65-85)
-
Elders gifts-maybe 3 or 4
small items-(ideas: shampoo, soap, warm socks, gloves, baseball
caps, head scarves, towel)
WHAT TO EXPECT:
You will be walking in
the villages and the tundra is often uneven and very muddy. The weather,
even in the summer months, can be chilly and unpredictable, with rain
and very high winds. You will also be out in boats and you will be camping
(see above pictures), and therefore you will be subjected to the "elements."
Pack several layers of warm, waterproof clothing and a good pair of boots.
