The Alaska Partnership for Teacher Enhancement is proud to present the Summer 2005 Institutes.

These standards-based institutes have been developed as highly interactive so educators may explore new and different ways to develop curriculum and instruction that address real life Alaskan issues while improving leadership and teaching behaviors so that all students can achieve academic excellence.

English/Language Arts Instructors and Participants on tundra 2004

The 2005 Summer Institute in English Language Arts/Literacy will focus on teaching and learning about sense of place through literature, both oral and written. Participants will hear Yup'ik stories, read stories from Western culture and other traditions, talk with each other about significant stories from the participants' lives, and help one another learn more about how to involve our students in the stories of their lives and in literature in general. Eventually, we will be able to tell and write our own stories, in the same way we wish to encourage our students to do. Fundamental to all discussion and practical application of reading and writing activities will be the incorporation of and emphasis upon Alaska Content Standards for English/Language Arts.

The following is a list of equipment suggested for your village experience.

Host Community: Toksook Bay, Alaska
Toksook Bay is one of three villages located on Nelson Island, located approximately 115 miles northwest of Bethel, Alaska. Toksook Bay is a traditional Yup'ik Eskimo community, which relies heavily on fishing and subsistence activities. Commercial fishing, the Nelson Island Area Schools and the City are the primary sources of income for local residents. A state owned gravel airstrip provides scheduled and chartered air service year-round while fishing boats, skiffs, snow machines and ATVs are used for local travel in the area. Toksook enjoys a marine climate with approximately 22 inches of rainfall and 43 inches of snowfall annually. Summer temperatures range from 41°F-57°F.

Toksook Bay is the host for the 2005 English/Language Arts Summer Institute.

Whether camping on the tundra, working in a fish camp, listening to elders' stories about the history of their village and native traditions or learning about stellar navigation and subsistence cycles, the institutes promise to provide unique learning experiences that are enriching and enlightening for all who attend. All content institutes will be hosted in Alaska villages, based on the Alaska state content standards and taught through a variety of innovative classroom and practical experiences.
